5 AED Myths That Stop People From Acting
Automated external defibrillators are built for untrained rescuers, yet myths keep bystanders from grabbing one off the wall. Let us clear up the big five.
Myth 1: You can shock someone by accident
An AED analyzes the heart rhythm first and will only deliver a shock if one is needed. It will literally stay uncharged otherwise.
Myth 2: You need training to use one
Training builds confidence, but every AED talks you through each step out loud the moment you open the lid or turn it on.
Myth 3: AEDs restart a stopped heart
They actually stop a chaotic rhythm so the heart can reset itself. That is why CPR between shocks matters so much.
Myth 4: You can hurt the person more
A person in cardiac arrest is clinically dead. You cannot make that worse. So, anything you do, will be of help.
Myth 5: I will get sued if I do something wrong.
Truth is, it can happen but, Good Samaritan laws in every state protect bystanders acting in good faith. You're safe!
