STORY TIME: A lil' bit of science and a lot of faith!
At some point, we have heard of someone having a cardiac arrest and we have thought to ourselves "That won't happen to me."
But what if it does?About 2 weeks ago, I met a new patient in my Primary Care practice. We are talking about everything - current medications, medical history, family history, eating habits, physical activities, current stressors..and that's when I realized that the work that we do here, at The CPR Doc, is worth every single ounce of energy, time and investement.
There she is, telling me about a major stressor she had this year. It was an habitual day, she is in the living room and her husband about to take a shower. He was not feeling well that day, like if he was going to get sick. And suddenly; a loud noise coming from the bathroom. She went to open the door of the bathroom and his body was against the door. She pushed the door to get in. With the strength that you get without knowing where it's coming from. She talked to him - no response. She check for breathing - none. Pulse - none.
She yelled at the top of her lungs for help and for someone to call 911. Her son got his CPR certification within that prior week, his skills were fresh! They started doing CPR because their loved one's life was on the line. 10 minutes felt like an eternity. EMS arrived, her husband was taken to the hospital to get the Advance Cardiac Care he needed. HE SURVIVED. But not only that; HE HAD NO BRAIN DAMAGE NOR RESIDUAL COMPLICATIONS.And that's what CPR is about. Is not restarting a heart that suddently stopped working. Is giving the brain and the rest of the organs the oxygenated blood they need to function.WOW! What a story!Remember this story whenever you think it won't happen to you. It can happen to you, to me, to anyone with a beating heart. CPR is not just a certification. It's a skill that can save the life of your loved ones. Get trained!
